The assassination of Md Mohib Ullah, Chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, is a heinous crime, not only against Mohib Ullah and his family and the Rohingya people, but against all human rights defenders and people of conscience the world over.

We call for an immediate independent investigation into this vicious murder and for the killers to be brought to justice.

The situation in both Myanmar and the Rohingya refugee camps have become increasingly violent and polarised by extremist elements since the military coup in February. We condemn radicalisation and violence on all sides, but recognise that ultimate responsibility rests with the junta in Yangon which has for decades persecuted, disenfranchised, and dehumanised the Rohingya, culminating in the genocidal campaign over the past few years which resulted in the current misery and deprivation of hundreds of thousands of refugees in squalid, volatile camps where tension, resentment, and extremism inevitably incubate.

Whoever is identified as responsible for the murder of Mohib Ullah, they are the enemies of the Rohingya people. Their actions can only be viewed as a form of collaboration with the regime in Myanmar. They are wittingly or unwittingly contributing to the ongoing persecution of these long-suffering people. We, along with all advocates of the Rohingya cause, condemn both this grotesque act, and the reprehensible injustice that created the conditions for it to occur.
