The 2021 Israeli-Palestine major armed conflict that lasted for 11 days in May 2021 took the lives of 248 Palestinians, including 66 children due to the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip. In turn, the Hamas rocket fired into Israel killed 12 Israelis.
In clear violation of international law, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (“OCHR”) had called on Israel to immediately cease all forced evictions in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem.
The armed conflict is in breach of international law on the perspective of proportionality of armed response by Israel. The death of civilians and non-combatants of men, women and children forms clear breaches of international humanitarian law (“IHL”) and international human rights law (“IHRL”).
On 3 Mar 2021, pertaining to international criminal law, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court had announced the opening of the prosecutor’s investigation into the Palestine-Israel conflict, effective June 2014 on the jurisdictions of Gaza, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
